This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of ukiyo-e prints produced during the late Edo period. These works documented the arrival of foreigners in Japan following the opening of the port of Yokohama in 1859. The series, A Collection of Various Countries (Bankoku zukushi), provided a curious Japanese public with visual information regarding the appearance, dress, and customs of people from distant nations.
The composition depicts two figures on horseback, identified by the cartouche as English. The artist employs the characteristic flat perspective and bold outlines typical of the woodblock medium. The figures wear Western-style clothing, rendered with the stylised interpretation common to Japanese artists of the era who had limited direct exposure to European fashion. The man wears a brimmed hat and trousers, while the woman is depicted in a long coat and skirt. Their features and postures reflect the imaginative approach taken by Yoshitora to translate foreign subjects into the established visual language of the ukiyo-e tradition.
Colour is applied in distinct, flat planes, with a palette dominated by deep teal, brown, and muted grey. The background remains minimal, focusing the viewer on the interaction between the two riders. This print serves as a historical record of Japan's initial fascination with the West, capturing a moment of cultural exchange through the lens of popular art.
