A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora, depicting an English couple in Western attire during the opening of Japanese ports.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period as Japan began to open its ports to international trade. These prints functioned as visual reportage, satisfying the curiosity of the Japanese public regarding the appearance, dress, and customs of foreigners arriving in Yokohama.
The composition depicts an English couple standing beneath a shared umbrella, a motif that highlights the cultural fascination with Western accessories. The man wears a military-style jacket with epaulettes and a brimmed hat, while the woman is dressed in a voluminous skirt and a patterned head covering. Yoshitora employs a flat, graphic approach to the figures, typical of the period, with bold outlines and a limited colour palette. The background is a uniform, pale yellow, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the subjects and their attire.
A scroll-like cartouche in the upper right corner contains Japanese text, identifying the figures as English. The artist's signature and seal are present in the lower left, confirming the work's origin within the Utagawa school. This print is a document of a specific historical moment, capturing the initial encounter between Japanese artists and the influx of Western visitors. The stylised rendering of the figures reflects the artist's reliance on hearsay and limited direct observation, resulting in a unique interpretation of Western fashion through a traditional Japanese aesthetic lens. The print serves as a record of the cultural exchange that defined the mid-nineteenth century in Japan, offering a glimpse into how foreign visitors were perceived and documented by local printmakers.
