A detailed etching by Antonio Tempesta depicting Julius Caesar on horseback, rendered in a classical equestrian style with architectural ruins in the background.
This etching depicts Julius Caesar in a classic equestrian pose, a format frequently employed during the Renaissance and Baroque periods to convey authority and military command. Antonio Tempesta, a Florentine artist known for his skill in printmaking and his fascination with equestrian subjects, captures the Roman leader in profile. Caesar wears traditional Roman armour, including a breastplate adorned with a lion head, and a laurel wreath upon his head. He holds a baton, a symbol of his status as a general. The horse is shown in a dynamic, rearing position, which adds a sense of movement to the composition.
In the background, a landscape features architectural ruins, which serve to ground the figure in a classical Roman context. The sky is filled with stylised, rounded clouds, a common feature in Tempesta's graphic work. The etching technique allows for fine detail in the shading of the horse's musculature and the texture of the armour. The inscription at the base, 'DIVI IVLI CAESAR AVG', identifies the subject, while the signatures of Tempesta and the engraver, Matthäus Merian, appear at the bottom corners. This print is part of a series of Roman emperors, reflecting the period's interest in classical history and the use of print media to disseminate such imagery to a wider audience. The work demonstrates the technical precision of early seventeenth-century printmaking, where the interplay of line and cross-hatching creates volume and depth within a two-dimensional space.
