A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, depicting Emperor Henry II standing within an architectural niche.
This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever depicts the Holy Roman Emperor Henry II, presented within a shallow, shell-topped architectural niche. Aldegrever, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, was active in Westphalia during the sixteenth century. His work reflects the influence of Albrecht Dürer, particularly in the precision of the line work and the careful attention to the textures of the imperial regalia.
The figure of the Emperor is rendered with a focus on the decorative elements of his attire. He wears a heavy, fur-trimmed mantle adorned with floral motifs, which contrasts with the metallic sheen of the crown and the orb held in his left hand. His right hand grips a sword, a symbol of his temporal authority. The shell motif at the top of the niche provides a classical frame for the figure, a common device in Renaissance printmaking to suggest depth and monumental presence. The name 'HEINRICVS' is inscribed at the base, identifying the subject clearly within the composition.
Aldegrever was known for his small-scale, highly detailed engravings, which were often collected by connoisseurs of the period. This piece demonstrates his ability to balance the rigid formality of a royal portrait with the fluid, rhythmic lines characteristic of his engraving style. The shading is achieved through fine cross-hatching, which gives the robes a sense of volume and weight. The composition is balanced and contained, fitting the vertical format of the print. This work provides a clear example of the technical mastery achieved by German printmakers during the Reformation era, where the focus remained on clarity of form and the representation of historical or religious figures through traditional iconographic attributes.
