A hand-coloured engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicting the biblical judges Elon and Abdon, rendered in the Northern Renaissance style.
This hand-coloured engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicts the biblical figures Elon and Abdon, two of the minor judges of Israel. The work originates from a series documenting the lineage and history of these figures, rendered with the precision characteristic of the Flemish printmaking tradition. Collaert, a member of a prominent family of engravers in Antwerp, demonstrates a command of line and form that defines the Northern Renaissance aesthetic.
The composition presents the two figures in a pastoral setting, with a distant town and rolling hills providing a sense of depth. Elon, on the left, is dressed in a tunic with a draped mantle, while Abdon, on the right, wears a turban and a flowing cloak. Both figures are identified by Latin inscriptions, which provide context regarding their roles and governance. The hand-colouring adds a layer of visual interest, with muted tones of blue, purple, and ochre applied to the garments and the surrounding terrain. The engraving technique is evident in the fine hatching used to model the drapery and the facial features of the subjects.
As a piece of historical printmaking, this work offers insight into the way biblical narratives were visualised during the late sixteenth century. The attention to detail in the clothing and the inclusion of Latin text reflect the scholarly and religious interests of the period. The print serves as a record of the artistic conventions of the time, where the combination of technical engraving skill and narrative clarity was highly valued. This reproduction captures the nuances of the original print, preserving the character of the lines and the application of colour. It is a piece that invites close inspection of its historical and stylistic elements, suitable for those interested in the history of printmaking and biblical iconography.
