A striking Symbolist work by Jacek Malczewski depicting the angel Eloe carrying the soul of Anhelli, inspired by Polish Romantic poetry.
Jacek Malczewski, a central figure in the Polish Symbolist movement, produced this work between 1908 and 1909. The painting depicts a scene from Juliusz Słowacki's poem 'Anhelli', where the angel Eloe descends to carry the soul of the deceased protagonist to heaven. Malczewski frequently drew inspiration from Polish Romantic literature, blending national identity with mythological and spiritual themes.
The composition is dominated by the expansive, sweeping wings of the angel, which create a protective arc around the figure of Anhelli. The angel is rendered with a grounded, human physicality, wearing practical, rustic attire that contrasts with the ethereal nature of the subject. The palette is marked by deep, earthy tones in the clothing and wings, set against the cold, stark white of the snow-covered ground and the dramatic, fiery sky in the background. The artist employs a firm, descriptive brushwork that defines the musculature and the texture of the fur and feathers, grounding the supernatural event in a tangible reality.
Malczewski often used his own features or those of his contemporaries in his work, and the figures here possess a distinct, individualised character. The interaction between the two figures is one of gentle care, as the angel secures the body for their ascent. The painting reflects the artist's preoccupation with themes of death, salvation, and the role of the artist as a spiritual guide. By placing the scene within a harsh, wintry environment, Malczewski emphasises the isolation of the human condition, while the presence of Eloe introduces a sense of hope and transition. This work remains a significant example of the artist's ability to synthesise literary narrative with a highly personal, visual language, characteristic of his mature period.
