A formal portrait of academic Eliphalet Pearson, painted by James Frothingham after an original by Samuel F.B. Morse.
This portrait depicts Eliphalet Pearson (1752-1826), a significant figure in American academic life who served as the first principal of Phillips Academy and as a professor at Harvard University. The work is a copy executed by James Frothingham, based on an earlier portrait by Samuel F.B. Morse. Frothingham, a student of Gilbert Stuart, developed a reputation for his ability to capture likenesses with precision and a restrained, formal approach typical of early nineteenth-century American portraiture.
The composition follows the conventions of the period, presenting the subject in a bust-length format within a painted oval. Pearson is shown in clerical attire, wearing a dark coat with a white neckband, which provides a stark contrast against the muted, dark background. The lighting is focused on the subject's face, drawing attention to his features and the subtle modelling of his skin tones. The brushwork is controlled, reflecting the influence of Stuart's technique, which prioritised clarity of form and a dignified presentation of the sitter.
As a copy, this painting demonstrates the common practice of the era, where artists would replicate successful portraits to preserve the image of prominent individuals for institutional collections. The work provides insight into the visual culture of early American academia, where portraiture functioned as a means of documenting leadership and maintaining institutional history. The focus remains on the character of the sitter, rendered with a sense of gravity and intellectual presence. This fine art print captures the tonal qualities of the original oil painting, preserving the sombre palette and the formal composition that defined the portraiture of the period.
