A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting travellers near Ejiri with Mount Fuji in the distance.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the station of Ejiri, a stop along the Tokaido road connecting Edo and Kyoto. The composition features a view of Mount Fuji in the distance, partially obscured by clouds, while the foreground shows travellers navigating a path near a cluster of thatched-roof buildings. The presence of calligraphic text at the top identifies this as part of the Kyoka iri Tokaido series, which incorporates humorous poems known as kyoka into the design of each print.
Hiroshige uses a balanced arrangement to guide the viewer through the scene. The large, dark pine tree on the right provides a visual anchor, contrasting with the lighter, rolling hills and the distant peak of the mountain. The colour palette relies on muted greens, soft blues, and earthy tones, typical of the printing techniques employed during the Edo period. The figures are rendered with simple, clean lines, capturing the movement of people carrying goods along the route.
As a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, Hiroshige focused on the atmospheric qualities of the Japanese countryside. This print captures a moment of daily life, blending the natural environment with the human activity of travel. The inclusion of the poem adds a literary layer to the visual narrative, reflecting the cultural interests of the period. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where multiple blocks were used to build the final image. This work remains a representative example of Hiroshige's ability to document the geography and social character of nineteenth-century Japan.
