A refined ink-on-silk study of two horses by the Yuan Dynasty master Zhao Mengfu, showcasing his signature calligraphic brushwork and classical style.
Zhao Mengfu, a scholar-official during the Yuan Dynasty, produced this work as part of a broader tradition of horse painting in Chinese art. The horse served as a common metaphor for the talented individual or the virtuous official within the imperial bureaucracy. By choosing this subject, Zhao engaged with the legacy of Tang Dynasty masters, such as Han Gan, while applying his own refined brushwork and calligraphic sensibility.
The composition features two horses standing in proximity, rendered with precise, controlled lines. The artist employs a muted palette, allowing the focus to remain on the form and posture of the animals. The manes and tails exhibit a rhythmic, coiled quality, demonstrating the artist's mastery of the brush. The silk support has aged to a warm, neutral tone, which complements the ink washes used to define the musculature and coats of the horses. Red collector seals appear on the surface, indicating the history of the scroll as it passed through various private collections over the centuries.
Zhao Mengfu was known for his advocacy of archaism, or the return to the styles of earlier periods, as a means of personal expression. This approach prioritised the inner spirit of the subject over mere outward appearance. The horses appear calm and dignified, reflecting the scholar-official ideal of composure. The work provides a clear example of the literati approach to painting, where technical skill is balanced with intellectual depth and historical awareness. The lack of a complex background ensures that the viewer concentrates on the interaction between the two figures, noting the subtle variations in their stance and expression. This print captures the texture of the original silk and the delicate ink work, offering a clear view of the artist's technique.
