Watanabe Seitei, also known as Watanabe Shotei, was a prominent figure in the transition of Japanese art during the Meiji period. Trained in the Kikuchi Yosai school, he later integrated Western watercolour techniques with traditional ink wash methods. This work exemplifies his mastery of kacho-ga, the genre of bird-and-flower painting, which focuses on the observation of nature through a refined, minimalist lens. The composition features two egrets positioned upon a dark, submerged rock. One bird stands on a single leg, its head tucked in a posture of rest, while the other remains alert. The background is rendered in soft, atmospheric washes of grey, suggesting a misty morning or the quiet stillness of a marsh.
