Shibata Zeshin was a master of both lacquerware and painting, known for his ability to synthesise traditional Japanese techniques with a minimalist aesthetic. This work, executed in the format of a fan painting, demonstrates his command of ink wash and negative space. The subject is a solitary egret perched upon a weathered tree stump, rendered with economy of line and subtle tonal variation.

Zeshin often utilised the kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on birds and flowers, to explore themes of transience and natural beauty. The composition is asymmetrical, a hallmark of his style, which draws the eye across the expanse of the paper. The background features a gold-flecked border, providing a decorative frame that contrasts with the muted, organic tones of the central subject.
