A minimalist woodcut print by Dutch artist Julie de Graag, featuring a stark, high-contrast silhouette of a duck.
Julie de Graag was a Dutch artist associated with the Hague School and later, the Symbolist movement. Her graphic work is defined by a rigorous economy of form, often utilising the woodcut medium to explore the essential silhouettes of her subjects. This print, titled Eend (Duck), demonstrates her ability to reduce a natural form to its most basic, recognisable components.
The composition relies on a stark contrast between the white of the paper and the dense black ink. By removing extraneous detail, de Graag focuses the viewer on the curve of the bird's neck and the streamlined shape of its body. The duck is presented in profile, contained within a simple rectangular border that reinforces the flat, graphic nature of the image. This approach reflects the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, which were widely admired by European artists during the early twentieth century for their clarity and compositional balance.
De Graag frequently turned to the natural world for her subjects, depicting animals, plants, and rural figures with a consistent, disciplined hand. Her work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, preferring instead to capture the character of the subject through bold lines and solid blocks of colour. This print is a clear example of her technical precision and her preference for a minimalist aesthetic. The image functions as a study in negative space, where the background is as active as the subject itself. It is a quiet, controlled piece that demonstrates the strength of the woodcut medium when handled with such deliberate restraint. This print is suitable for those who appreciate the intersection of early modern graphic design and traditional printmaking techniques.
