A detailed seventeenth-century Dutch etching depicting the assassination of King Edward II of England in his bedchamber.
This etching by the Dutch publisher and engraver Jan Claesz ten Hoorn depicts the dramatic and violent end of King Edward II of England. The scene captures the monarch in his bedchamber, where he is being smothered by his assailants. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the foreground, where a figure tends to a fire, and the background, where the regicide occurs within the confines of a four-poster bed.
Ten Hoorn employs a rigorous system of cross-hatching to define the shadows and textures of the room. The architectural elements, such as the arched ceiling and the heavy fireplace, provide a sense of enclosure that heightens the tension of the narrative. The inclusion of a helmet on the mantelpiece and discarded tools on the floor adds specific detail to the setting, grounding the historical event in a tangible, albeit dramatised, environment. The figures are rendered with a focus on gesture and movement, reflecting the theatrical style common in Dutch book illustrations of the late seventeenth century.
The text at the bottom, written in Dutch, identifies the subject as Edward II and describes his death. This work is typical of the period, where historical chronicles were often accompanied by graphic visual interpretations to engage the reader. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the engraver in managing light and shadow to create a sense of depth within a relatively small format. It serves as a record of how historical events were interpreted and visualised for a contemporary audience during the late seventeenth century in the Netherlands.
