A dramatic woodblock print from 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo', featuring a soaring eagle above the snow-covered plains of Susaki.

This print is part of the series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo', a collection produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the final years of his career. The image depicts a large eagle in mid-flight, viewed from above, as it soars over the snowy expanse of the Susaki district in Fukagawa. In the distance, the faint outline of Mount Tsukuba rises above the horizon, providing a sense of scale to the vast, frozen plain below. Hiroshige employs a bold, unconventional perspective here. By placing the eagle in the foreground, he creates a dramatic contrast between the sharp, dark feathers of the bird and the pale, muted tones of the winter landscape. The use of 'bokashi', a technique involving the manual gradation of ink on the woodblock, is evident in the deep blue sky that transitions into a lighter hue near the horizon. This method adds depth to the composition, drawing the eye from the immediate presence of the eagle toward the distant, snow-covered terrain. The print demonstrates the artist's mastery of the 'meisho-e' genre, which focuses on famous locations. Rather than providing a standard topographical view, Hiroshige chooses a dynamic, almost cinematic angle. The composition relies on the tension between the predatory bird and the quiet, desolate environment. The fine lines used to render the eagle's plumage contrast with the simplified, almost abstract treatment of the snow-covered ground. This work remains a representative example of the late Edo period's aesthetic, where artists experimented with extreme cropping and unusual viewpoints to revitalise traditional printmaking techniques. The print is a technical achievement in woodblock printing, requiring multiple blocks to achieve the subtle colour transitions and the crisp definition of the eagle against the atmospheric background.
