A fluid abstract composition by Romul Nutiu, featuring swirling blue pigments and organic forms that suggest cosmic energy.
Romul Nutiu, a significant figure in Romanian post-war art, developed a distinct approach to abstraction that prioritised the physical movement of paint. In Dynamic Universe I, the artist employs a fluid technique where pigments appear to flow across the canvas surface, creating a sense of suspended motion. The composition avoids rigid geometry, favouring organic, swirling forms that suggest cosmic or geological processes.
The palette is dominated by various shades of blue, ranging from deep, near-black navy to lighter, cerulean tones. These are punctuated by areas of white and subtle hints of green, which provide contrast and depth. Nutiu often utilised gravity and the viscosity of his materials to dictate the final form, allowing the paint to pool and streak in ways that mimic natural phenomena. This method removes the trace of a traditional brushstroke, resulting in a surface that feels both spontaneous and controlled.
Nutiu was associated with the neo-expressionist movements that emerged in Romania during the latter half of the twentieth century. His work often reflects an interest in the relationship between the artist and the material, where the act of painting becomes a performance of energy. By focusing on the interaction of colour and form, he creates a visual experience that invites the viewer to interpret the shifting shapes without the constraints of representational subject matter. This piece demonstrates his ability to balance chaos with a cohesive structural logic, making it a representative example of his later abstract period. The work remains an exploration of space and movement, captured through the medium of oil paint on a large scale.
