This early landscape painting by Theo van Doesburg depicts a grassy, rolling landscape under a cloudy sky, showcasing his pre-De Stijl style with loose brushwork and a predominantly green colour palette.
Theo van Doesburg, born Christiaan Emil Marie Küpper, was a Dutch artist who practised painting, writing, poetry and architecture. He is best known as the founder and leader of De Stijl. Van Doesburg began painting around 1900, initially working in a style influenced by late Impressionism. This painting, titled 'Dune Landscape', is an early work, painted before he fully embraced the abstract principles of De Stijl. The painting depicts a rolling, grassy landscape under a cloudy sky. The colour palette is dominated by shades of green, with touches of blue in the sky and some earth tones in the foreground. The brushwork is loose and expressive, creating a sense of movement and atmosphere. The composition is simple, with the landmasses taking up most of the picture plane. The painting is not highly detailed, but it captures the essence of the landscape in a direct and immediate way. It is a good example of Van Doesburg's early style, before he moved towards abstraction.
