A serene watercolour by Eric Ravilious depicting the Baptist Chapel at Capel-y-ffin, set against the rolling hills of the Black Mountains.
Eric Ravilious produced this work during his visits to the Black Mountains in Wales, a region that held a particular fascination for him throughout the 1930s. The composition captures the Baptist Chapel at Capel-y-ffin, set against the imposing, rounded form of the Duke of Hereford's Knob. Ravilious employs his characteristic watercolour technique, using controlled washes and precise, rhythmic marks to define the structure of the hills and the architecture of the chapel.
The scene is quiet and observational. A plume of smoke rises from the chapel chimney, suggesting a human presence within the isolated valley. In the foreground, the gravestones are rendered with a stark, graphic quality, their shadows stretching across the grass in a manner that emphasises the stillness of the location. The rolling hills behind are delineated by dry-stone walls, which create a geometric pattern across the terrain. This approach reflects the artist's background in wood engraving, where line and texture are used to build form rather than relying on heavy impasto or atmospheric blurring.
Ravilious often focused on the intersection of human-made structures and the natural environment. Here, the chapel acts as a anchor for the eye, while the surrounding topography provides a sense of scale and remoteness. The palette is restrained, favouring earthy tones, ochres, and muted greens that mirror the Welsh countryside. By avoiding excessive detail, he allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and the structural integrity of the scene. This work remains a clear example of his ability to document the British countryside with a distinct, modern sensibility, stripping away sentimentality to reveal the underlying geometry of the rural environment.
