A study of a coastal dune and expansive sky by Dutch Hague School painter Jan Willem van Borselen.
Jan Willem van Borselen was a Dutch painter associated with the Hague School, a group of artists known for their focus on the atmospheric qualities of the Dutch countryside. This study, titled Duintop met op de achtergrond de zee, captures a modest dune formation set against a vast, overcast sky. The composition is dominated by the movement of clouds, rendered with visible, directional brushwork that suggests the shifting winds typical of the North Sea coast.
The palette remains restrained, relying on muted greys, ochres, and pale blues to convey the specific light conditions of the Netherlands. Van Borselen avoids excessive detail, choosing instead to focus on the tonal relationships between the earth and the atmosphere. The low horizon line allows the sky to occupy the majority of the frame, a common technique among painters of this period who sought to capture the expansive nature of the coastal environment.
This work functions as a direct observation of natural phenomena. The artist applies paint with a degree of spontaneity, reflecting the practice of working en plein air to record fleeting weather patterns. The corners of the panel are clipped, a characteristic often found in preparatory sketches or studies intended for the artist's private reference rather than immediate public exhibition. By stripping away narrative elements, the piece invites the viewer to observe the interplay of light and texture. It provides a clear example of the Hague School's interest in the quiet, unpretentious beauty of the Dutch terrain, prioritising mood and atmosphere over rigid topographical accuracy. The work remains a study in observation, documenting the subtle variations in colour and form that define the coastal region.
