An etching by Antonio Tempesta illustrating the mythological transformation of Dryope into a lotus tree, taken from his series on Ovid's Metamorphoses.
This etching by Antonio Tempesta depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses, specifically the transformation of the nymph Dryope. Tempesta, a prolific printmaker based in Rome, produced a series of illustrations for Ovid's epic poem, which circulated widely across Europe. The composition captures the moment of metamorphosis, where Dryope, having inadvertently offended the gods by plucking a lotus flower, begins to merge with the tree. Her son, Amphissus, stands beside her, reaching out in distress as his mother's form becomes arboreal. Tempesta employs a precise, linear etching technique to define the figures and the surrounding environment. The hatching patterns create volume in the drapery and texture in the bark of the tree, while the background remains relatively sparse to keep the focus on the central narrative. The inclusion of the Latin inscription, 'Driope in arboris formam transmigrat', at the base of the print aligns with the standard format for classical illustration series of the early seventeenth century. The artist's ability to condense complex narrative action into a single, legible frame demonstrates his mastery of the medium. His work often reflects the influence of the Mannerist tradition, visible here in the elongated proportions and the expressive, somewhat theatrical gestures of the figures. This print offers a clear example of how classical literature was visualised for a learned audience during the Baroque period, providing a direct link to the intellectual culture of the time.
