A traditional Ming Dynasty ink painting depicting a recluse resting beneath an ancient tree, capturing a moment of quiet detachment.
This work by the Ming Dynasty artist Chen Zihe depicts a solitary figure in a state of repose. The subject, a recluse, lies sprawled beneath the gnarled branches of an ancient tree. His posture suggests a deep, alcohol-induced slumber, a common motif in Chinese literati painting that explores themes of detachment from worldly concerns and the pursuit of personal freedom through unconventional behaviour.
The composition relies on the contrast between the organic, twisting forms of the tree and the relaxed, rounded shape of the sleeping man. Chen Zihe employs a controlled use of ink wash to define the textures of the bark and the folds of the recluse's robes. The background remains largely atmospheric, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the human figure and the natural environment. The ink tones are muted, reflecting the aged condition of the silk support and the traditional aesthetic of the period.
Chen Zihe was active during the mid-Ming period, a time when artists often looked back to earlier traditions while developing individualistic styles. This piece demonstrates the technical proficiency required to balance figure and setting within a vertical hanging scroll format. The recluse is rendered with expressive, slightly exaggerated features, which adds a sense of character to the scene. The inclusion of a small vessel nearby reinforces the narrative of the drunken state. This print captures the subtle gradations of the original ink work, preserving the quiet, contemplative mood of the composition. It offers a glimpse into the philosophical traditions of the era, where the figure of the eccentric hermit served as a symbol for those who chose to live outside the rigid structures of official society.
