A serene winter scene from Utagawa Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, featuring a snow-covered drum bridge in the Meguro district.
This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the final years of his career. The composition depicts a winter scene at the Meguro district, characterised by a heavy snowfall that blankets the trees and the iconic arched bridge. The bridge, known as a drum bridge due to its circular shape, serves as the primary architectural element, guiding the viewer across the frozen stream.
Hiroshige employs a distinct colour palette dominated by deep Prussian blue, which contrasts with the stark white of the snow. The figures crossing the bridge are rendered in simple, functional attire, their umbrellas providing small accents of colour against the cool tones of the winter environment. The sky transitions from a deep indigo at the top to a lighter hue near the horizon, suggesting the fading light of a winter afternoon. The trees, heavily laden with snow, frame the scene and add a sense of quiet stillness to the composition.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The registration of the colour blocks is exact, allowing for the fine details of the snow-covered branches and the texture of the bridge to remain clear. Hiroshige was known for his ability to capture atmospheric conditions, and this work is a clear example of his mastery over the depiction of weather. The use of negative space, particularly in the expanse of the snow-covered ground and the sky, balances the more detailed elements of the bridge and the figures. This print remains a representative example of the late Edo period aesthetic, focusing on the intersection of human activity and the natural world.
