Roy Lichtenstein's 'Drowning Girl' (1963) is a classic example of Pop Art. It features a comic-book style image of a woman in distress, rendered with bold colours and Ben-Day dots.
Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) was an American Pop artist. His work often drew inspiration from comic books and advertising. Lichtenstein defined Pop Art through parody, using bold colours and techniques borrowed from commercial printing. 'Drowning Girl', created in 1963, is one of Lichtenstein's most recognised works. It exemplifies his use of comic-book style imagery and melodramatic themes. The painting depicts a woman in turbulent water, seemingly overwhelmed, with a speech bubble containing the words: 'I DON'T CARE! I'D RATHER SINK THAN CALL BRAD FOR HELP!' Lichtenstein adapted the image from a panel in the DC Comics series 'Secret Hearts' #83. He simplified the composition, intensified the emotion, and applied his signature Ben-Day dots to mimic the halftone printing process of comic books. The work explores themes of love, loss, and female representation in popular culture. 'Drowning Girl' is part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
