A dynamic oil painting by Suzanne Perlman depicting the industrial dry dock of Curaçao with expressive brushwork and a warm, Mediterranean-inspired palette.
Suzanne Perlman, a Hungarian-born artist who spent much of her career in the Caribbean, captures the industrial character of the Curaçao dry dock in this oil painting. The composition focuses on the functional geometry of the shipyard, where the curve of a pipeline or dock structure guides the eye across the frame. Perlman employs a palette dominated by turquoise, ochre, and deep earthy tones, reflecting the specific light and colour of the island environment.
Her approach to the subject is distinctly expressionistic. Rather than documenting the site with photographic precision, she prioritises the rhythm of the machinery and the interplay of light on the water. The brushwork is confident and gestural, allowing the paint to convey the heat and activity of the dockyard. The presence of a cactus on the right side provides a sharp contrast to the man-made structures, grounding the scene in the local geography of Curaçao.
Perlman’s work often explored the intersection of human industry and the natural world. In this piece, the heavy, industrial forms of the dry dock are softened by her fluid application of paint. The result is a study of form and colour that captures the atmosphere of a working port. Her ability to translate the mechanical into a painterly language demonstrates her training and her keen observation of the Caribbean environment. This print offers a view into the mid-century industrial life of the island, rendered with the sensitivity and stylistic freedom characteristic of Perlman’s oeuvre.
