A collection of three preparatory watercolour designs for ceramic plate decoration by Dutch designer Theo Colenbrander, showcasing his signature organic, fluid style.
Theo Colenbrander was a Dutch architect and designer whose work occupies a distinct position within the transition from historicism to Art Nouveau. This sheet presents three separate studies intended for ceramic plate decoration. The primary design occupies the upper portion, featuring a dense, circular arrangement of floral motifs. The composition relies on fluid, organic lines that define the petals and leaves, creating a sense of movement within the fixed circular boundary. The palette consists of soft, muted tones, including pale yellows, pinks, and greens, which are typical of his preparatory sketches for the Rozenburg pottery factory.
The lower section of the sheet contains two additional, isolated motifs. These forms are more abstract, displaying the characteristic sinuous curves that define Colenbrander's approach to ornamentation. His designs often moved away from the rigid symmetry found in earlier industrial ceramics, favouring instead a more spontaneous, rhythmic application of colour and line. The presence of handwritten annotations and construction lines across the paper reveals the technical nature of the work, showing how the artist planned the placement and scale of his patterns before their application to the clay surface.
Colenbrander's output is noted for its departure from traditional Dutch pottery styles. He sought to integrate architectural principles with decorative arts, resulting in pieces that feel both structured and highly imaginative. This print captures the initial phase of his creative process, where the focus remains on the balance between form and colour. The work provides insight into the methodology of a designer who prioritised the expressive potential of the ceramic surface, treating the plate not merely as a functional object, but as a canvas for his unique visual language.
