Nicolas Robert, a draughtsman and engraver known for his botanical studies and decorative prints, published this work as part of a series intended for artisans and architects. The composition features three distinct masks, each rendered with the precision characteristic of the period. The upper mask is framed by elaborate acanthus-like foliage, demonstrating the influence of classical motifs on Baroque decorative arts. Below, two contrasting masks appear: one with a turban-like head covering and an open mouth, suggesting a theatrical or tragic persona, and another with a grotesque, bearded visage reminiscent of a satyr or architectural keystone. The print displays a high degree of technical control. The engraver, identified as K. Audran, employs fine parallel lines to create shading and volume, giving the masks a sculptural quality. The background is composed of horizontal hatching, which provides a neutral field that allows the forms to project forward.
