Nicolas Robert
A seventeenth-century French etching featuring three distinct masks framed by classical foliage, originally designed as a model for architectural decoration.
This etching, titled Drie maskers, originates from the seventeenth-century French tradition of ornamental design. Nicolas Robert, a draughtsman and engraver known for his botanical studies and decorative prints, published this work as part of a series intended for artisans and architects. The composition features three distinct masks, each rendered with the precision characteristic of the period. The upper mask is framed by elaborate acanthus-like foliage, demonstrating the influence of classical motifs on Baroque decorative arts. Below, two contrasting masks appear: one with a turban-like head covering and an open mouth, suggesting a theatrical or tragic persona, and another with a grotesque, bearded visage reminiscent of a satyr or architectural keystone. The print displays a high degree of technical control. The engraver, identified as K. Audran, employs fine parallel lines to create shading and volume, giving the masks a sculptural quality. The background is composed of horizontal hatching, which provides a neutral field that allows the forms to project forward. Such prints were circulated widely among craftsmen to provide models for stone carving, metalwork, and interior decoration. The work reflects the period's fascination with classical antiquity and the grotesque, themes that were common in the decorative programmes of the French court and private residences of the era. By presenting these masks as isolated studies, the artist provides a clear reference for the application of ornamental sculpture in various architectural contexts. The clean lines and balanced arrangement of the figures make this a representative example of seventeenth-century print culture, where the utility of the design was as important as its aesthetic execution.
