A detailed pen and wash drawing depicting the difficult passage of soldiers across the Great St Bernard Pass during the Napoleonic era.
This work depicts the arduous passage of troops across the Great St Bernard Pass, a route famously traversed by Napoleon Bonaparte and his army in May 1800. Johann Christian Ernst Müller captures the scale of the alpine environment, contrasting the imposing, jagged mountain peaks with the human effort required to navigate such terrain. The composition is structured to lead the eye from the foreground, where soldiers and pack animals struggle through the snow, towards the stone hospice buildings nestled against the mountainside.
Müller employs a restrained palette of sepia and grey washes, which serves to emphasise the cold, desolate atmosphere of the high-altitude crossing. The line work is precise, typical of the period's illustrative style, focusing on the clarity of form and the narrative details of the soldiers' equipment and posture. The figures in the foreground are rendered with individual attention, showing the physical toll of the march, while the background dissolves into the atmospheric haze of the mountain range.
As a historical record, the drawing provides a glimpse into the logistical challenges of early nineteenth-century military campaigns. The artist balances the grand scale of the geography with the mundane realities of military life, such as the presence of dogs and the slow, steady movement of the column. The use of light and shadow, achieved through layered washes, creates a sense of depth that draws the viewer into the scene. This piece is a study of human endurance against the backdrop of natural obstacles, presented with the technical discipline characteristic of Müller's draughtsmanship.
