An intimate 1860 etching by August Allebé, depicting a view through an open door into his Amsterdam studio.
This etching by August Allebé, titled 'Doorkijk door een geopende deur' (View through an open door), offers a quiet, observational glimpse into the artist's personal space. Created in 1860, the work captures the interior of his studio located at the Oude Boter-markt in Amsterdam. The composition relies on the interplay between the light-filled foreground and the shadowed, mysterious depth of the room beyond the threshold.
Allebé employs precise, controlled lines to define the texture of the wooden door and the rough surface of the surrounding wall. A straw hat hangs on the left, providing a sense of human presence within the otherwise still environment. The perspective draws the eye through the aperture, where the suggestion of a chair and draped fabric hints at the daily activities of the artist. The etching demonstrates his technical proficiency in handling light and shadow, a hallmark of his training and his later career as a director of the Rijksakademie.
Unlike the grand historical subjects often favoured by his contemporaries, this piece focuses on the mundane reality of the artist's immediate surroundings. The inscription at the bottom, written by the artist himself, anchors the work in a specific time and place. It serves as a personal record of his early professional life. The print retains the character of a private study, inviting the viewer to consider the atmosphere of a nineteenth-century Dutch studio. The muted tones and careful cross-hatching create a sense of tactile reality, grounding the image in the physical world of the mid-nineteenth century.
