This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicts the legend of Dong Yong, a figure from the Chinese classic, The Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety. The narrative recounts Dong Yong selling himself into servitude to pay for his father's funeral. His devotion moves the heavens, and a celestial weaver descends to assist him in weaving silk to buy his freedom. Kuniyoshi captures the moment of the celestial being's departure or arrival, with figures below gesturing towards the sky in awe.

The composition employs a clear division between the terrestrial realm, marked by the shoreline, the gate, and the figures, and the ethereal space occupied by the floating weaver. Kuniyoshi uses a balanced palette of muted blues, ochres, and reds, typical of the mid-nineteenth-century Edo period. The lines are precise and controlled, defining the drapery of the celestial figure and the expressive postures of the observers. The inclusion of a small boat on the water and a tree framing the right side provides spatial depth to the scene.

As part of the series Nijushiko doji kagami, this work functioned as both an educational tool and a moral guide for children. The text block in the upper left corner provides the specific moral lesson associated with Dong Yong. Kuniyoshi, known for his imaginative compositions and technical skill, brings a sense of movement to the static medium of the woodblock print. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to blend traditional moral instruction with the visual language of the Ukiyo-e school. It remains a representative example of how classical Chinese narratives were adapted and visualised for a Japanese audience during the late Edo period.
