A 1794 engraving by Raphael Morghen, based on a portrait by Angelica Kauffman, depicting Domenica Volpato Morghen in a classic oval composition.
This engraving by Raphael Morghen, dated 1794, depicts Domenica Volpato Morghen. The work is based on an original painting by the Swiss-born artist Angelica Kauffman. Morghen, a master of the burin, was highly regarded for his technical precision and his ability to translate the soft textures of oil painting into the rigorous medium of copperplate engraving.
The portrait is presented within a classic oval frame, a common convention for eighteenth-century portraiture. Domenica is shown in a three-quarter view, her expression calm and composed. The artist employs fine cross-hatching and stippling to model the subject's features and the delicate folds of her attire. The contrast between the dark, dense background of the oval and the lighter tones of the subject's face and bodice creates a clear sense of volume and presence.
Raphael Morghen was a central figure in the printmaking circles of Rome during the late eighteenth century. His collaboration with prominent painters like Kauffman allowed his work to reach a wide audience of collectors and connoisseurs. The inscription at the base of the print identifies both the painter and the engraver, a standard practice that acknowledges the collaborative nature of reproductive printmaking during this period. The paper shows signs of age, including characteristic foxing and staining, which provide a sense of the object's history as a physical artefact from the late Enlightenment era. This print offers a window into the aesthetic values of the time, where clarity, balance, and technical mastery were held in high regard.
