Published in 1833, the work captures the Gothic architecture of Frankfurt Cathedral, known as the Dom, rising above the narrow, timber-framed streets of the city. Prout was a master of the picturesque, a style that prioritised the aesthetic qualities of aged buildings and urban decay. His approach to architectural drawing was highly influential during the nineteenth century, as it encouraged a romanticised view of European travel.

The composition employs a vertical perspective, drawing the eye upward from the bustling street level to the soaring spire of the cathedral. Prout uses precise, thin lines to define the stonework and the textures of the surrounding buildings. The application of muted watercolour washes provides a sense of atmosphere, softening the sharp edges of the lithographic ink. Figures are scattered throughout the foreground, providing a sense of scale and daily life within the historic urban environment.
