A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting a dolphin caught in a fishing net, rendered with precise line work and historical charm.
This etching, titled Dolfijn in een visnet, originates from the seventeenth-century tradition of natural history documentation. Jacques van Merlen, a Flemish engraver and publisher active in Paris, produced this work during a period when scientific curiosity and artistic observation often overlapped. The print depicts a dolphin resting upon a fishing net, rendered with a focus on anatomical detail and texture. The artist employs cross-hatching and varied line weights to define the creature's skin, the mesh of the net, and the surrounding coastal environment.
The composition balances the central subject with a sparse background, featuring a gnarled tree, distant clouds, and a small ship on the horizon. Such elements provide a sense of scale and setting, typical of the period's approach to biological illustration. The inclusion of the inscription, Delphinus Le Dauphin, identifies the subject for the viewer, reflecting the educational intent behind many such prints of the era. The work is marked with the signature of Albert Flamen, who was a contemporary engraver known for his depictions of animals and birds, suggesting a collaborative or workshop production common in the print trade of the time.
Technically, the etching demonstrates the precision required for copperplate printing. The lines remain clear and deliberate, capturing the contrast between the smooth surface of the dolphin and the rougher textures of the shore and net. This piece offers a glimpse into the historical intersection of art and marine biology, providing a record of how such creatures were perceived and catalogued by European observers in the seventeenth century. The print is presented here as a high-quality reproduction, maintaining the character of the original ink-on-paper medium.
