A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Anthonie Waterloo, depicting figures and a dog beside a stream in a dense, wooded setting.
Anthonie Waterloo was a Dutch painter and etcher known for his focus on wooded scenery. This etching demonstrates his technical command of the medium, using varied line weights to construct a dense, atmospheric forest environment. The composition is anchored by large, mature trees that dominate the upper portion of the frame, their foliage rendered with fine, rhythmic strokes that suggest texture and depth.
In the lower foreground, a small stream provides a reflective surface where a dog pauses to drink. Two figures are present, one standing and one crouching, integrated into the natural setting. Waterloo avoids excessive detail in the figures, allowing them to remain secondary to the surrounding woods. The light filters through the canopy, creating a sense of quiet isolation typical of his work.
Waterloo did not follow the traditional Dutch practice of painting expansive, open vistas. Instead, he preferred the enclosure of the forest, often depicting paths, streams, and gnarled tree trunks. His approach to etching involved layering lines to build shadow and volume, a method that gives his prints a painterly quality. The work reflects the seventeenth-century interest in the natural world, capturing a specific, unidealised moment in the woods. The signature, A.W. in. et f., appears in the upper left corner, indicating that Waterloo both invented and etched the composition himself. This print is a representative example of his output, which was widely collected during his lifetime and influenced later generations of printmakers interested in the depiction of trees and rural environments.
