A detailed botanical study by Marianne North, framing the distant peak of Mount Fuji with cascading wisteria blossoms.
Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who documented the flora of the world with scientific precision. During her extensive travels in 1875, she visited Japan, where she produced this composition. The work frames a distant view of Mount Fuji through a foreground of hanging wisteria blossoms. North utilised a technique of painting directly from nature, often in challenging conditions, to capture the specific botanical characteristics of the plants she encountered.
The composition employs a framing device, using the cascading purple racemes of the wisteria to draw the eye towards the central, snow-capped peak of the mountain. The middle ground features a calm body of water with small traditional boats, providing a sense of scale and atmosphere. The colour palette is soft, relying on the contrast between the pale, cool tones of the distant mountain and the warmer, saturated hues of the foreground foliage.
North donated her entire collection of over 800 paintings to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where they remain housed in a gallery she commissioned. Her work is valued for its accurate recording of plant species, many of which were rare or endangered at the time of her travels. This print captures the specific aesthetic of her Japanese series, reflecting her ability to combine topographical observation with a decorative sensibility. The clarity of the light and the precise rendering of the wisteria petals demonstrate her technical skill with oil paints on board, a medium she preferred for its durability during her long expeditions across various climates.
