A masterful High Renaissance composition by Andrea del Sarto, depicting six saints in theological discussion beneath a vision of the Trinity.
Andrea del Sarto painted this work, often referred to as the Disputa, for the church of San Francesco in Sarzana. It depicts a theological discussion regarding the doctrine of the Trinity. The composition features six saints arranged in a semi-circle: Saint Augustine, Saint Lawrence, Saint Peter Martyr, Saint Francis, Saint Sebastian, and Mary Magdalene. Above them, God the Father supports the crucified Christ, while the dove of the Holy Spirit is positioned between them.
The painting demonstrates the artist's mastery of colour and form, characteristics that earned him the nickname 'Andrea senza errori' (Andrea the faultless). The figures are rendered with a soft, atmospheric quality, a technique known as sfumato, which allows for smooth transitions between light and shadow. The drapery is handled with precision, showing the weight and texture of the fabrics worn by the saints. The palette is balanced, using deep reds, ochres, and cool blues to create a sense of harmony across the panel.
Del Sarto organises the figures to guide the viewer's eye through the narrative. Saint Augustine, on the left, gestures towards the central figures, while the others engage in quiet contemplation or debate. The inclusion of Saint Sebastian, shown from the back, adds a sense of depth and physical presence to the foreground. The background is kept relatively dark, which draws attention to the illuminated figures and the divine manifestation above. This work is a representative example of Florentine painting during the early sixteenth century, reflecting the technical rigour and stylistic refinement of the period.
