An abstract composition by Romul Nutiu, featuring a blend of structured grid elements and fluid, expressive oil paint textures in warm, earthy tones.
Romul Nutiu, a significant figure in Romanian post-war art, developed a distinct approach to abstraction that merged gestural energy with structured, almost architectural, elements. In Diary VI, the canvas functions as a space for both spontaneous mark-making and deliberate organisation. The composition is divided, featuring a grid-like section that contrasts with the fluid, organic forms dominating the lower half of the work.
Nutiu often employed a heavy application of oil paint, creating a tactile surface that invites close inspection. The colour palette is dominated by warm, earthy tones, specifically deep oranges and ochres, which are balanced by cooler greys and whites. This interplay of colour creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer into the layered textures of the paint. The grid element introduces a sense of order, perhaps referencing the systematic nature of a diary or a record, while the surrounding abstract forms suggest the chaotic, subjective nature of memory and experience.
His work is frequently associated with the experimental spirit of the late twentieth century, where artists sought to break away from representational constraints. Nutiu avoids clear narrative markers, preferring to communicate through the physical properties of his medium. The result is a work that feels both personal and universal, capturing a moment of transition or reflection. By combining geometric precision with expressive, sweeping brushwork, Nutiu creates a visual dialogue between the rational and the intuitive. This print captures the depth of the original oil application, preserving the nuances of his technique and the specific character of his colour choices.
