A classical depiction of the mythological discovery of Callisto's pregnancy by the goddess Diana, painted by French master Eustache Le Sueur.
Eustache Le Sueur, a founding member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, produced this work during the mid-seventeenth century. The painting depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses, specifically the moment the goddess Diana discovers the pregnancy of her nymph, Callisto, after the latter was seduced by Jupiter.
Le Sueur organises the composition with a clear focus on the narrative tension between the figures. Diana, positioned on the left, gestures towards the seated Callisto, whose state is revealed as her companions assist in disrobing her. The artist employs a palette of soft, muted tones, allowing the drapery in shades of ochre, blue, and rose to guide the viewer's eye across the canvas. The figures exhibit the grace and balanced proportions characteristic of the French Classical tradition, influenced by the works of Raphael and Poussin.
Technically, the painting demonstrates Le Sueur's ability to manage complex group dynamics within a woodland setting. The lighting is gentle, avoiding harsh contrasts to maintain a sense of harmony. The foliage and trees provide a backdrop that frames the central action without overwhelming the human subjects. This work reflects the period's interest in classical literature as a source for moral and dramatic subjects in painting. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical clarity and expressive gesture, typical of the artist's approach to narrative clarity. The composition remains balanced, with the weight of the figures distributed to create a sense of stability despite the dramatic nature of the discovery.
