A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Cornelis Cort depicting the mythological encounter between Diana and Callisto.
Cornelis Cort, a Dutch engraver who spent his final years in Italy, produced this engraving based on the mythological narrative of Diana and Callisto. The scene depicts the moment Diana discovers Callisto's pregnancy, an event that leads to the nymph's expulsion from the goddess's retinue. Cort demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of varied hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the figures and the textures of the surrounding woodland.
The composition is organised around a central fountain, which serves as a pivot for the narrative action. To the left, Diana gestures towards the distressed Callisto, who is being disrobed by other nymphs on the right. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and complex poses characteristic of the Mannerist style. Cort's ability to translate the painterly qualities of his sources into the medium of engraving allowed his work to circulate widely across Europe, influencing the development of printmaking techniques during the sixteenth century.
In this print, the atmospheric treatment of the background, with its rolling hills and cloud-filled sky, provides a sense of depth that contrasts with the foreground activity. The trees frame the scene, creating a theatrical space for the mythological drama. Cort's work is notable for its clarity and the precision of its line work, which captures the tension of the encounter. This print remains a representative example of the collaborative nature of sixteenth-century print production, where engravers often worked from designs by other masters to bring complex narratives to a broader audience.
