A modernist figure study by Le Corbusier, featuring two women and a chair rendered in bold outlines and muted, geometric colour blocks.
Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, known as Le Corbusier, remains primarily recognised for his architectural contributions, yet his painting practice occupied a consistent space in his creative output. This work, Deux femmes debout à la chaise, demonstrates his engagement with the human form through the lens of Purism and later synthetic styles. The composition presents two figures, rendered with bold, black outlines that define their anatomical volumes against a flattened, geometric background.
The figures exhibit a rhythmic distortion, where limbs and torsos merge into a singular, cohesive arrangement. Le Corbusier employs a restricted palette of muted tones, allowing the structural lines to dictate the visual experience. The inclusion of the chair provides a domestic anchor, contrasting with the abstracted, almost sculptural treatment of the bodies. His approach to the canvas mirrors his architectural philosophy, where space, light, and form are organised with mathematical precision. The figures do not exist in a traditional three-dimensional environment, but rather inhabit a plane where colour blocks and lines create a sense of balance.
This piece reflects the artist's interest in the relationship between the organic body and the rigid, man-made objects that surround it. The interaction between the curved lines of the figures and the straight edges of the furniture creates a visual tension. By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist focuses on the essential geometry of the scene. This work offers a view into the private artistic explorations of a man who spent his career defining the modern built environment. It is a study of form, volume, and the interplay of shapes, presented with the clarity and discipline characteristic of his broader body of work.
