A classic Purist still life by Le Corbusier, featuring simplified geometric forms and a muted colour palette.
Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, known as Le Corbusier, developed the Purist movement alongside Amédée Ozenfant during the early 1920s. This aesthetic sought to strip away the decorative excesses of Cubism, favouring a return to clear, geometric forms and a rational approach to composition. In 'Deux bouteilles' (1926), the artist applies these principles to the traditional genre of still life. The objects are reduced to their essential silhouettes, presented with a clarity that reflects the artist's architectural training.
The composition relies on the interplay of overlapping planes and a restrained colour palette. Rather than capturing the fleeting effects of light or the texture of the objects, Le Corbusier focuses on the relationship between volume and space. The two bottles, which provide the title for the work, are rendered as flattened, iconic shapes. They sit upon a table surface that is similarly simplified into geometric segments. The muted tones of grey, olive, and soft blue create a sense of order and stability.
This work demonstrates the Purist interest in the 'object-type', where everyday items are elevated through a process of rigorous simplification. By removing unnecessary detail, the artist invites the viewer to consider the fundamental geometry of the subjects. The painting functions as a study in balance and proportion, mirroring the logic applied to his designs for modern housing and urban planning. The lack of deep perspective ensures that the viewer remains engaged with the surface of the canvas, acknowledging the medium as a constructed space rather than a window into a three-dimensional world. This approach remains a defining characteristic of his visual art, showing a clear connection between his painting practice and his broader architectural philosophy.
