Description
A Cubist still life by Auguste Herbin, 'Dessert' features fragmented geometric forms and a muted colour palette to depict a table arrangement of fruit and vessels.
Auguste Herbin (1882-1960) was a French painter known for his contributions to Cubism and abstract art. He initially experimented with Fauvism before embracing Cubism around 1909. His Cubist works often featured geometric forms and a restricted colour palette, moving towards abstraction in later years. He was a founding member of the group Abstraction-Création in 1931, advocating for non-figurative art. His later work explored the use of flat, geometric shapes and symbolic colours. 'Dessert' exemplifies Herbin's Cubist approach to still life. The composition presents a table arrangement with fruit, a pitcher, and other vessels, all rendered in fragmented geometric shapes. The colour scheme is relatively muted, with browns, greens, and yellows dominating. The objects are not depicted realistically; instead, they are broken down into facets and reassembled in a way that emphasises form and structure over naturalistic representation. The painting reflects the Cubist interest in multiple perspectives and the reduction of objects to their essential geometric components.
