A detailed fragment from Duccio's Maestà, depicting the Pentecost with gold leaf accents and traditional Sienese tempera techniques.
This image is a detail from the Maestà, the monumental altarpiece commissioned for the Siena Cathedral. Duccio di Buoninsegna, a central figure in the Sienese School, completed this work between 1308 and 1311. The scene depicts the Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit descends upon the Virgin Mary and the Apostles.
The composition is defined by the use of gold leaf, which creates a luminous, ethereal background typical of early fourteenth-century Italian painting. The figures are arranged in a semi-circular formation, their gazes directed inward or toward a central point. Duccio employs a sophisticated use of colour, particularly in the deep blues of the Virgin's mantle, which is decorated with fine gold lines to suggest the folds of the fabric. The Apostles are rendered with individualised facial features, showing a departure from the more rigid Byzantine models that preceded this period.
Each figure possesses a halo, rendered in gold, which unifies the group within the sacred space. The application of tempera allows for a precise, linear quality in the drapery and the facial contours. This fragment captures the transition toward a more humanistic approach in religious iconography, where the emotional state of the subjects is conveyed through subtle gestures and expressions. The work remains a primary example of the technical skill and theological narrative focus that defined the Sienese tradition during the late Middle Ages.
