Duccio di Buoninsegna, a central figure in the Sienese School, composed this scene with a focus on the emotional weight of the narrative. The work depicts the removal of Christ from the cross, a moment defined by the physical interaction between the figures and the central structure of the ladder.

The composition is organised around the vertical axis of the cross, which divides the scene while providing a frame for the figures. To the left, the Virgin Mary embraces her son, her posture mirroring the curve of his body. This physical connection creates a sense of shared grief. The other figures, including Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, are rendered with a degree of naturalism that was innovative for the early fourteenth century. Their gestures are deliberate, conveying the gravity of the task at hand.

Duccio employs a gold background, a convention of the period that removes the scene from a specific temporal or physical location.
