A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Jean Moyreau depicting an aristocratic hunting party preparing for departure in a classical setting.
This etching and engraving by Jean Moyreau, titled Departure for the Bird Hunt, captures the aristocratic leisure activities common in eighteenth-century French art. Moyreau, a skilled printmaker, translated the painterly qualities of Philips Wouwerman into the precise medium of copperplate engraving. The composition depicts a group of figures preparing for a hunt, set against a backdrop of classical architecture and a sprawling, open vista.
The scene is organised with a clear division between the foreground activity and the distant horizon. To the right, a stone staircase leads toward a grand building, while the left side opens into a wide, atmospheric expanse. Figures on horseback, accompanied by hounds, occupy the centre, creating a sense of movement and anticipation. The inclusion of a fountain and classical statuary adds a layer of refinement, typical of the period's interest in pastoral and noble themes. The fine lines of the engraving allow for a high degree of detail, from the textures of the horses' coats to the subtle shading of the clouds.
Moyreau was well-regarded for his ability to replicate the works of Dutch masters, and this print reflects that technical proficiency. The dedication at the bottom of the plate, addressed to the Marquis de Marigny, indicates the social context in which such works were produced and circulated. It serves as a record of the aesthetic preferences of the French elite during the mid-eighteenth century. The print demonstrates a balance between the structured, formal elements of the architecture and the more fluid, naturalistic treatment of the figures and the surrounding terrain. This work provides a window into the visual culture of the era, where the hunt was not merely a sport but a subject for artistic exploration and display.
