Between them sits a globe, draped with a jester's cap and topped with a cross, symbolising the vanity of earthly power and the absurdity of human affairs.

The composition is typical of late sixteenth-century Northern Mannerist printmaking. De Bry employs precise, controlled lines to define the figures, their heavy drapery, and the distant architectural backdrop. The background features a fortified town, providing a sense of scale and setting the philosophical debate within a tangible, worldly context. The Latin inscription at the base, 'ET RISV PARITER DIGNI FLETVQ VIDEMVR', translates to 'We are seen as worthy of both laughter and tears alike', summarising the dual perspective offered by the two thinkers.
