George Inness painted Delaware Valley during a period when his work shifted away from the precise detail of the Hudson River School towards a more subjective, atmospheric approach. This piece demonstrates his interest in the effects of light and weather on the American countryside. The composition is dominated by a sweeping, golden-hued hillside in the foreground, which leads the eye towards the river valley below. A lone figure stands in the lower centre, providing a sense of scale against the vast, rolling terrain.
Inness utilised a muted palette of ochres, browns, and soft greens to capture the hazy quality of the air. The sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas, filled with heavy, textured clouds that suggest an approaching storm or the fading light of late afternoon. His brushwork is loose and painterly, prioritising the overall mood of the scene over the exact rendering of individual trees or buildings. This technique creates a sense of unity across the canvas, where the earth and sky appear to merge in the distance.
By the mid-1860s, Inness had spent time in Europe, where he encountered the Barbizon School. Their influence is visible here in his focus on tonal harmony and the emotional resonance of the natural world. Rather than documenting a specific geographical location with cartographic accuracy, Inness aimed to convey the feeling of being present in the space. The result is a quiet, contemplative image that relies on subtle shifts in colour and value to create depth. This work remains a representative example of his transition into the style that would later be defined as Tonalism, where the artist's internal state is projected onto the external world.
