A classic ink and wash painting by Xu Beihong, featuring two deer beneath gnarled trees, demonstrating his signature blend of traditional Chinese brushwork and Western realism.
Xu Beihong occupies a specific position in twentieth-century Chinese art. He is known for his synthesis of traditional Chinese brushwork with Western academic realism. This work demonstrates his ability to capture the anatomy and movement of animals through fluid, calligraphic ink lines. The two deer are rendered with a focus on their physical form, while the surrounding trees are depicted with heavy, expressive ink washes that suggest texture and age.
In this composition, the artist balances the negative space of the paper with the dense, dark forms of the gnarled trees. The deer are positioned in the foreground, their spotted coats rendered with subtle washes of colour that contrast against the monochromatic tones of the forest. Xu Beihong often used animal subjects to convey specific sentiments or national character, moving away from purely decorative traditions. His training in Paris influenced his approach to light and shadow, yet he maintained the essential spirit of the literati painting tradition. The calligraphic quality of the branches shows his mastery of the brush, where each stroke carries weight and direction. This print captures the balance between the stillness of the forest and the alertness of the animals, providing a clear view of the artist's technical approach to ink wash painting.
