A refined Japanese woodblock print by Keisai Eisen featuring a New Year still life with an Otafuku mask and pine, accompanied by traditional poetry.
This woodblock print by Keisai Eisen belongs to the genre of surimono, which were privately commissioned prints often distributed among members of poetry circles. The composition features a collection of symbolic objects associated with the Japanese New Year. A small, stylised pine tree sits atop a stand, accompanied by a mask of Otafuku, a figure representing mirth and good fortune. The inclusion of these items suggests a celebration of prosperity and joy during the festive season.
The print is notable for its delicate application of colour and the inclusion of calligraphic text, which occupies a significant portion of the upper field. The text consists of kyoka, a form of humorous or satirical waka poetry that was popular among the literati of the Edo period. The balance between the visual elements and the written word is characteristic of the surimono format, where the aesthetic quality of the paper and the precision of the carving were paramount.
Eisen, a prolific artist of the Ukiyo-e school, demonstrates his skill in capturing the quietude of a still life arrangement. The lines are fine and controlled, reflecting the technical demands of the woodblock medium. The palette is restrained, relying on soft tones to create a sense of harmony. The Otafuku mask, with its rounded features and gentle expression, provides a human element to the otherwise inanimate objects. This work offers a glimpse into the cultural practices of the nineteenth-century Japanese elite, where the exchange of such prints served as a social ritual. The composition remains uncluttered, allowing the viewer to appreciate the individual details of the pine needles, the texture of the mask, and the fluidity of the brushwork in the accompanying poetry.
