A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Jan van de Velde II, depicting a quiet Dutch town scene during the winter month of December.
This etching, titled December, is part of a series depicting the twelve months of the year. Jan van de Velde II, a master of the Dutch Golden Age, captures the essence of winter in a small town setting. The composition is structured around a canal, with traditional Dutch architecture lining the banks. Bare trees reach toward a pale sky, while smoke rises from chimneys, suggesting the cold temperature of the season.
In the foreground, figures are engaged in daily activities despite the chill. A group of people gathers near the water, while others walk across a stone bridge. The artist employs fine lines and cross-hatching to create texture and depth, particularly in the rendering of the stone masonry and the frozen atmosphere. The inclusion of the zodiac symbol for Capricorn at the top centre provides a classical reference, common in seasonal series of this period. Latin inscriptions at the bottom of the print offer a poetic commentary on the arrival of winter and the cessation of agricultural labour, reflecting the cyclical nature of the calendar.
Van de Velde II was known for his technical skill in printmaking, and this work demonstrates his ability to balance architectural precision with human activity. The scene is quiet and observational, documenting the rhythms of life in the seventeenth-century Netherlands. The print serves as a historical record of period dress, building styles, and social interaction during the winter months. Its monochromatic palette focuses the viewer on the interplay of light and shadow, which defines the stark, wintry mood of the composition.
