A detailed seventeenth-century engraving depicting the seasonal activities of December, including traditional rural tasks and a winter townscape.
This engraving, titled December, is part of a series depicting the months of the year. Aegidius Sadeler II, a member of a prominent family of engravers, produced this work during his time in Prague, where he served the imperial court of Rudolf II. The composition follows the tradition of the Labours of the Months, a theme common in medieval and Renaissance art, which links seasonal agricultural activities to the passage of time.
The scene captures the cold atmosphere of late winter. In the foreground, figures are engaged in the slaughter and preparation of a pig, a traditional task for the final month of the year. Smoke rises from a fire, providing a contrast to the bare, skeletal branches of the large tree that dominates the centre of the image. In the background, a townscape is visible, suggesting a connection between rural life and urban centres. The sky features the zodiac sign of Capricorn, identifying the month within the astrological calendar.
Sadeler employs precise line work to define the textures of the winter landscape, from the rough bark of the trees to the fabric of the peasants' clothing. The engraving demonstrates the technical skill associated with the Sadeler workshop, which was known for its ability to translate complex compositions into high-quality prints. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the image provides a moralising or descriptive commentary, a common feature in prints of this period intended for an educated audience. The work offers a glimpse into the daily life and seasonal rhythms of the early seventeenth century, presented with the clarity and attention to detail characteristic of Northern European printmaking.
