This engraving, titled December, is part of a series depicting the months of the year. Aegidius Sadeler II, a member of a prominent family of engravers, produced this work during his time in Prague, where he served the imperial court of Rudolf II. The composition follows the tradition of the Labours of the Months, a theme common in medieval and Renaissance art, which links seasonal agricultural activities to the passage of time.

The scene captures the cold atmosphere of late winter. In the foreground, figures are engaged in the slaughter and preparation of a pig, a traditional task for the final month of the year. Smoke rises from a fire, providing a contrast to the bare, skeletal branches of the large tree that dominates the centre of the image.
